ABSTRACT
The combined range of economic choices has made possible within Madang considerable differentiation in participation in the cash economy, in the control of cash and cash-producing resources and hence in life-styles. Madangs obtain rights to land in a number of different ways. The ultimate ownership and control of most land lies with the clan, and the use of a considerable proportion of it is still decided regularly by clan tamaniak. To give more security of tenure to those investing in cocoa and coconuts, clan tamaniak have begun to divide some but never all of their land among their members. The tamaniak decided to provide a work team for each adult male clan member in turn to clear an area of forest for commercial development. There is no clan or village level of organization in the cooperative. The decision to join is made by individual cocoa-growers.
