ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the genealogical relationships between the various tribal and intra-tribal groupings as well as the ideological mode in which these relationships are given significance. While the genealogical tree usually presents the various founders of the Kawahla tribes as Kahil's sons, this necessarily mean that they were actually begotten by Kahil himself. The pattern of the Kawahla rules regarding marriage also suggests other reasons for both endogamy and the high percentage among the limited number of out-lineage marriages or marriages to 'strangers'. The house was furnished with a few simple things: a large double bed called a sarir, made from date-palm branches, together with some cooking pots and utensils. The patrilineage, consisting of male agnates tracing their common descent to the founder of the lineage, formed a corporate group responsible for the protection and defence of the whole lineage membership.
