ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the main economic activities of the Hill Pandaram, hunting, the collection of minor forest produce and the gathering of vegetable resources. In describing the nature of these activities it illustrates the dualistic economy. Paranthadi settlement lies a mile east of Torai forestry station in the heart of the reserve on the northern bank of the Achencoil river. The inventory of serviceable material possessions at Paranthadi is comparable to that typical of forest camps. At Paranthadi there are cultivations of tapioca and dry rice, interspersed in some places with various vegetable species. Across the Shencottah plains, on the forested hill slopes above Puliyara, there is a settlement very similar to that at Kannumpalli. The Hill Pandaram make camps in the caves or rock shelters which are scattered all over the Western Ghats.
