ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the notion of ethics as they apply to life and to educational contexts. It answers, at a basic level, the question: Where do ethics emanate from? Some definitions and technical terms are explained. The chapter begins with an example from everyday life, in which we watch different actors in a brief story react differently to the same ethical issue. The chapter then moves into focused discussion of education issues, including a number of examples for you to explore and debate. On the way, we discuss the relative existence of theoretical answers and practical solutions to ethical dilemmas using generic examples of real school-based problems. The educational principles exemplified in this chapter are expanded in Chapter 2 and applied more rigorously to the work of teachers.
