ABSTRACT

School governors devote a massive amount of time, energy, skill and thought to their schools. What ethical behaviour is required for school governors? What duties might they be called upon to perform? At times of crisis, they are called on to act – what ethical guidelines should they observe? What happens when the conflict is with the principal/head teacher? How do staff-governors who are teachers fare in these situations? The requirements of government for governing bodies are examined and exemplified in the chapter. The chapter looks at the advantages for aspiring leaders of gaining experience as a staff governor, especially as a way of gaining ethical awareness.
