ABSTRACT

This chapter puts into place the lessons from Chapters 4 and 5 to suggest the things that a teacher might need to consider in planning lessons for students and what a department leader might need to look for in scrutinising lesson plans. The chapter then considers assessment: what is assessed, how and when; it looks at the relative values of feedback, marking and formal assessment. Much store is set by homework as a means to more effective learning in many primary schools and by almost all secondary schools; so the third section of the chapter looks at the ethics of homework: its rationale, its effect on students and its social consequences. This section of the chapter presents a challenging case concerning the ethics of homework. The chapter ends with a suggested proforma aimed at ensuring teachers consider, as part of their planning process, the ethical dimensions of their lessons; the proforma would alert leaders with oversight of lesson planning to issues concerning ethical procedures.
