ABSTRACT

Middle leaders are commonly torn in several directions. As well as all their dealings with students (which are discussed in previous chapters in this text) they have to uphold the school's mission and vision while trying to make positive relations with their departmental or other staff. In this situation, all kinds of tensions can arise – so how can a middle leader deal with these? What qualities does a middle leader need to tread this path? How does one obey recognised practice while clinging on to one's own integrity in a time of turbulence? Some of the qualities of a middle leader are rehearsed: honesty, integrity, respect, humanity, just dealing, team skills, the ability to make decisions.
