ABSTRACT

The assessment of cultural resources uses both quantitative and qualitative processes. The most labour-intensive part of the process is the survey and data collection stage. Some councils may be in a position to use consultants or research organisations to collect primary research data. The alternative is to train volunteers from the community, especially from cultural organisations, to undertake the various surveys. The census and other ABS publications can reveal lots of information about women at the local level. Most of the tables with information about individuals include figures for both men and women, allowing researchers to develop a separate profile of the female population. The census contains some information on Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in each local community. Additional information is available through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission in Canberra and the relevant department in each state and territory government.
