ABSTRACT
Representing the Aboriginal Embassy in Canberra was Allan Murray and he made the following speech to the Aurukun people which was translated into Wikmunkun: This flag that the people are raising today is the Aboriginal flag. It is the same flag that is now flying at our Aboriginal Embassy in Canberra which was opened last month. When the Queensland Government announced its intentions to take over administration of Aurukun and Mornington Island from the Uniting Church, the Federal Government stepped in with promises of self determination for the Aborigines of the two reserves and enacted self management legislation for all Queensland reserves. Liberal Aboriginal Senator Neville Bonner has stuck by the Aurukun and Mornington Island people but his government has let him down badly. The Land Council was in the process of being incorporated and was doing similar work to the Northern Territory Land Council but without any government finance.
