ABSTRACT

In the present era in China of rebuilding Catholic churches and reclaiming their past, Candida Xu is known to both scholarly and popular audiences. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Candida Xu was drawn back into the recollection of Chinese Christians, once again made known by Fr. Couplet’s biography. Candida Xu became a part of the Jesuit effort to promote support among the people of Europe for their missions in China. With a combination of creativity and practicality, Candida Xu found ways in a society where women were separate and secluded to accomplish much. Candida Xu, gentle and obedient, strong of mind and heart, came from a long line of strong women who used their wits and their resources to benefit the family. Candida Xu was a memorable, remarkable woman, and her influence – her legacy of wholehearted devotion to God, faith, and service – lives on.
