ABSTRACT
Bastard Economics can be filled out by reflecting on our accelerating consumer society and accelerating producer society. The term itself is inspired by the notion of Bastard Feudalism, whereby some historians distinguish a degeneration of the conditions in England in the later feudal period. There is a sense in which the idea of a consumer society does fit in within the framework of economic theory, and this is the trade-off of leisure and additional consumption. Bakan’s most original idea is that, as the corporation is pronounced by the legal system to be a person with rights that belong to a person, the corporation should be evaluated as a person. The movie The Corporation identifies such corporate features as the following: reckless disregard for the safety of others, deceitfulness, incapacity to experience guilt, callow concern for the feelings of others, incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, and failure to conform to social norms with respect to legal behaviors.
