ABSTRACT

The gathering space on the roof is used by the tenants of the building all year round with 24-hour access in New York City. The primary seasons of use are spring through autumn. The space is approximately 860 square feet. On rooftop designs, dead weight and live weight are important to address. The live load includes any temporary or moving objects. There are also snow load weights. These weights are based on the structure, and an engineer determines the load-bearing capacity of the roof. The tiles are raised above the roofline on short risers. The space between the tiles and roof is where rainwater drains to, irrigation and electric pipes are placed, and other infrastructure is hidden from view. The tiles can be lifted for repairs or changes. The irrigation is used from spring through autumn, set on timer for the seasons.
