ABSTRACT

The courtyard is designed within the 6-story building of 149 apartments and contains a gated entry from the street. The street lights, building entry lights, and lights from the apartment windows shed enough light for use of the courtyard at night for relaxing and meeting friends. An urban space of this size can hold multiple people at one time. The urban sounds of the area in the South Bronx are typical, with cars, people walking and talking, children playing in the courtyard, in the winter creating snow designs, and using the space to read a book. Across the street from the courtyard is a park. The courtyard has approximately a 1% slope across the site, with water draining from the street to the front of the building, and angled to drain into the edge plantings. Full privacy is not typically part of the urban experience, something which many urbanites accept as part of the urban lifestyle.
