ABSTRACT

Words matter. This chapter expands on the lessons taught in Chapter 3 and digs deeper into grammar, spelling and punctuation. We review common errors in AP style and grammar, paying particular attention to verb tense, commas and apostrophes. We provide a list of words that can easily replace passive, jargon-filled words and our brief section on “No, No, No Words” takes the reader through many of the clichés and worn-out expressions that should never be used in any kind of writing and provides conversational replacement words and phrases.
