ABSTRACT
This first chapter will explore some of the reasons why there is such a need to help and protect young children and why it is so important to put their needs and wellbeing at the heart of all that we do in the early years. We will also consider the reasons why and how the early years workforce is so well placed to provide appropriate responses in such a unique and effective way. Furthermore, we will acknowledge the challenges and obstacles that present to early years professionals. These challenges often require smart navigation and resolve delivered by a skilled and determined workforce.
