ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines what is involved in preparing a research project along with a discussion of aspects relating to postgraduate studies in particular. As part of student's studies, students may be asked to undertake a research project. Certainly at postgraduate level some sort of major project, dissertation or thesis is usually a requirement. Postgraduate studies differ from undergraduate studies in both practical and inherent features. Practical considerations include completion time, method of delivery and scheduling of classes. Inherent features of a course include course content, intensiveness of the pace, reading and writing demands, research requirements and assessment issues. Time-management skills are vital to postgraduate studies, especially when conducting research. The research method selection depends on student's field of study and research question. As a Masters or Doctorate level student, the student needs to take the initiative in exploring different approaches and discussing the merits of each with student's supervisor who will help student identify the most appropriate method.
