ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a number of ways of getting the students to be organised and taking the stress out of a life split between the part-time student and the full-time person. The key to successful part-time study is organising student's time. Most part-time students are already juggling all sorts of activities, thus making a commitment to study often requires the students to raise their organisational skills to another level. Time management is particularly important to the part-time research student—at first glance it may seem that there is plenty of time to devote to study during a semester, but it is time which can very quickly disappear if they are not careful. A semester study schedule is a little trickier as it means gauging how much time will be taken up preparing assignments, but it is worth the effort. It gives the students the opportunity to plan around activities such as holiday breaks, conferences and social activities.
