ABSTRACT

The notion of entering into academic argument refers to the process of reasoning to come to solid conclusions. Reasoning is demonstrated through a number of aspects of a course, such as written work, class discussions, oral presentations and assignments. It is important to take advantage of the opportunities given in class to extend student's knowledge. In practical terms, student's participation in class may also be counted towards student's assessment score. Lectures are generally held for all the participants in a course or for groups ranging from 30 to 300 students. The bigger they are the less opportunity there is to interact with the lecturer by asking questions; thus lectures become a time for you to gain an overview of the topic and take notes. Smaller classes offer the opportunity for you to participate actively—here you can bring up issues, ask questions, clarify confusing points, get feedback and explore ideas in more detail.
