ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the steps involved in essay planning and writing and explores different essay types, paragraphing and the drafting process. Essays also differ in perspective depending on the purpose of the argument. The three main essay types you should know about are the argumentative, the descriptive and the analytical. Argumentative essay style concentrates on presenting an analysis of an argument. Descriptive type of essay is centred around describing an event, a situation, a method or a hypothesis. The purpose of the analytical essay is to compare and/or evaluate theories, arguments, models, methodologies, a writer’s style or some other aspect indicated by the essay question. Viewing the different steps in writing up an essay as process will help you develop both student's planning and writing skills. Drawing up a plan or outline for student's essay may take couple of drafts, but once you get this part right you will be well on the way to writing up good essay.
