ABSTRACT

They were disappointed with post-war Europe, with the weak republics, the economic crisis, the decline of the west, the “morning after”, and in response to all this they offered an “authentic human type” and a political community from which a “new man” would emerge. Through Walter Benjamin, the chapter will examine the inception of Fascism as an avant-garde movement (whether artistic or political), fascism becomes a political movement that stirs up the masses and gives them a deceptive sense of community, a pseudo-active citizenship. The techniques of reproduction and the media create their own audience and permit political activity to be mirrored and disseminated in real time, so that its course and results can be shaped by the response of the public-medium created by the action itself. The revolutionary changes permit manipulation of the masses, moulding them into solidarity or hostility. Fascism, by its aestheticization of politics, includes the masses in the political game in order to remove them from the business of politics itself.
