ABSTRACT

The vast majority of academic leader job postings demand excellent communication skills. This chapter recognizes the centrality of the communication skill set and trains the reader in a number of related competencies including active listening, one-to-one discussions, public speaking, dealing with the media, formal and informal messaging, and the encoding and decoding of nonverbals or body language.

In addition to learning essential and advanced principles across a comprehensive range of communication skills, the reader gains insights from practical examples that focus on challenges academic leaders face.
