ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores some reasons why children behave the way they do and invites us to use this iceberg analogy to unpick the behaviour of our own children. It links children's behaviour to attachment theory, adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and the importance of feeling safe and secures in our home and setting. The book explores why children behave the way they do, for example, unmet basic needs, frustration at not being understood or sharing objects. It explores developmentally appropriate expectations for our children and why it is vital that our expectations are realistic. The book explains the importance of validating feelings and considers how we can use an emotion coaching response style.
