ABSTRACT

This chapter links children's behaviour to attachment theory, adverse childhood experiences and the importance of feeling safe and secures in our home and setting. It explains that there are some factors that inhibit children from learning or prevent them from feeling safe and secure and early childhood educators have a key role to play in helping and supporting children. The foundation for children's social, emotional and mental health begins with the first attachments they make with their primary caregivers. Generally speaking attachment theory suggests that children may initially want to remain in close proximity to their main caregiver. Kind actions and words fill buckets, unkind actions and words empty buckets.
