ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a number of different reasons why children behave the way they do. It shares the characteristics of children during conflict situations or when they behave in challenging ways. It explains about the natural emotional response that happens in our brains and how we are unable to think when our emotions overtake us. Communication and language develop rapidly in a child's first three years and children's understanding of language develops in advance of their speech, so children will understand much more than they can say. Children may also feel very frustrated when their physical skills do not quite match what they want to do. Children have a real sense of justice, injustice, fairness and rules, regardless of whether or not they keep the rules themselves.
