ABSTRACT

This chapter shares the importance of observation and getting to know our children really well. It suggests that practitioners are very good at finding out children's interests but may not have considered this from an emotional perspective. Thinking about behaviour as communication is the most helpful way to support a child and ensure we respond appropriately. Early years educators are really good at following the child and keeping their interests and needs central in our planning. As a behaviour detective it is vital that we listen to children and try to find out their perspective. Detectives never work alone. Reflecting on learning and the way we behave jointly with children is an effective way of gathering the voice of the child.
