ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some specific strategies employed to support children when they behave in challenging ways. Strategies to support children's challenging behaviour are rather like tools in a toolbox. It is really helpful to have clear expectations and share them with our children, perhaps in the form of some basic rules. Depending on the age/stage of the children we support, we may be able to devise these rules with them. Challenges often arise when emotions run high. Knowing how to de-escalate the situation and calm things down is essential. Ignoring is a useful strategy to use sometimes. Distraction is also a useful strategy and works best for younger children. Several behavioural challenges arise out of feelings of frustration or a desire by a child to feel better understood.
