ABSTRACT

Therapeutic interviewing is the process by which an advanced psychiatric mental health nurse (APMHN) establishes rapport with a client while conducting a psychiatric mental health evaluation. It invites the client to invest in building the therapeutic relationship and enables the APMHN to more easily collect the information essential to making an accurate diagnosis. This chapter provides an overview of the principles of therapeutic interviewing and illustrates how to apply those principles to engage the client. It presents guidelines for conducting a psychiatric evaluation, an example of one, and the primary psychiatric terminology that APMHNs must know to effectively utilize the common documentation employed in clinical practice.
