ABSTRACT

No matter the setting, advanced psychiatric mental health nurses (APMHN) will work with clients from many different cultural and social backgrounds. Understanding how different beliefs and practices can influence a client’s understanding of their mental health, and their presentation of it, is critical for APMHNs to deliver culturally sensitive clinical practice. This chapter provides guidelines by which APMHNs can conduct effective psychiatric assessments that identify a client’s cultural beliefs and integrate them into a diagnosis and treatment plan that respects cultural meaning.
