ABSTRACT

China and Japan, the two most important countries in Asia, are not only close neighbors across a narrow sea, but also close economic and trade partners. However, the two have experienced constant friction and frustrations in their relations, for reasons such as historical issues and territorial disputes, resulting in a steady decline in the sense of familiarity and trust between the two peoples. This not only affects political and diplomatic ties between the two, but also exerts adverse influence on their economic development. What is the image of China in the eyes of the Japanese in today's Sino-Japanese exchanges? What factors affect the Japanese awareness of China's image? This chapter will deal with these questions in combination with the data from survey questionnaires and in-depth interviews, and thereby seek to uncover methods and strategies for improving China's image.
