ABSTRACT
Culture plays a decisive role in shaping the national image of a country. Culture can help people communicate intellectually and exchange deeper levels of thought, and thereby enhance people-to-people understanding and mutual reliance, and develop deeper impressions of another country in the minds of the whole people. The history of cultural exchanges between China and Japan goes back to ancient times, including exchange in traditional literature, music, dance, calligraphy, and religion, as well as mutual development of institutional culture in the political and economic fields. This chapter explores the following questions based on the results of the survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews: How does cultural exchange influence the image of China in the eyes of the Japanese? How do the Japanese view traditional Chinese culture today? To what extent do Japanese people understand China's contemporary political and economic systems? How can cultural exchange serve as a bridge to enhance mutual understanding between the people of the two countries and to improve Sino-Japanese relations?
