ABSTRACT

National image is closely related with the spiritual outlook, civilization level, and morality demonstrated by the nationals of the country. Japanese media frequently reports on crimes by Chinese people in Japan, on various incidents of inappropriate behavior of Chinese tourists in Japan, and on cases in which Chinese nationals had unfair business dealings with Japanese people. This chapter discusses the following questions through survey and interview data: What image of Chinese people do Japanese people hold? Can the image of Chinese people among Japanese be improved? How does the image of Chinese people shape the national image of China in Japan?
