ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the Labour Party as its main point of concern, detailing newspaper coverage of both the party and, more significantly, some of its better-known politicians. Through analysing the framing of the likes of Ed Miliband and Alistair Darling, it will be shown that several centre-right newspaper titles – historically hostile to Labour – became much more generous and complimentary in their referendum coverage of the party. The apex of this trend came with the positive media treatment of Gordon Brown, a temporary development revealing much about the fluid priorities and allegiances of the British press.
