ABSTRACT

Children with speech, language and communication needs can have difficulty communicating with others. This can be for a range of reasons, and it is important to understand that the initial signs of delay may lead to alternative forms of the communication such as sign language, visual systems and augumentive and alternative forms of the communication. Educators are often engaged in holistic and whole-body ways of communication, and so while it is imperative that the peoples support all aspects of the speech, language and communication, this must be in tune with the child's unique development. Educators are often faced with significant barriers in the special educational needs & disability support, including timely access to early intervention. There is also an increasing pressure for children to be “school ready” based on a set of goals that do not represent the diversity of the children.
