ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a discussion of the athletes’ desire to suffer in order to improve themselves, and the author cautions that there is a difference between warning pain and performance pain. The ultimate goal is not to train through injuries or push bodies beyond healthy limits but to ensure that athletes have the mental fortitude to compete to their fullest potential. Suffering is a skill that creates an opportunity to compete with integrity. The chapter ties this in with those who seek treatment for eating disorders, conceptualizing the role of suffering in recovery. The author describes strategies for managing psychological suffering. The chapter ends with a list of action steps designed to help athletes develop a strong belief in themselves.
