ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the work and influence of Joan Littlewood who moved to Stratford East in 1953 and contrasts this with the regime of George Devine and associated Directors at the Royal Court over the same period. Their work is set against the background of a moribund repertory theatre outside London. This is accompanied by an introduction to the author through her childhood in Morecambe.
