ABSTRACT

While we have discussed some examples of adversity faced by a very large group of oppressed people, many other examples of such political and societal adversity exist and have existed across history (e.g., Afghanistan, Argentina, Chile, China, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Mexico, Myanmar, South Africa, Ukraine, United States, Yemen, and many others). Critical resilience response themes seemingly remain similar in the participants we have interviewed through time. In this chapter, I list observations from our findings and then discuss how these might be used to move forward in our understanding and fostering of critical resilience and thriving for those who, unfortunately, must go through human-created oppression. The concluding paragraphs of this chapter will be a final appeal for readers to acknowledge and recognize the systemic nature of many adversities, understand critical resilience and thriving, the critical circumstances that bring it about, the strengths inherent in it, and what we can do as a society to act upon the causes and factors affecting so many marginalized people in our world today and throughout history.
