The act had a narrative spine and everything else grew out of it organically, nothing was random and it all served to support the whole piece, the overall idea. A film should be about something and all the scenes should serve to make one's overall point. In certain circles like theater and TV, the writer and the script are considered an almost holy text that is not to be messed with. Many of the filmmakers interviewed for this book had strong feelings about applying the Three-Act Structure in their films. Most screenwriters learn the “rules” of screenwriting before producing anything. So, the metaphor is appropriate. In 2010, screenplays based on true stories won the Oscars for the best original screenplay and best-adapted screenplay. Lawrence Michael Levine writes, produces and directs his own films, but he makes his living as a screenwriter for hire and he touched on the topic of Three-Act Structure.
