ABSTRACT

The traditional view of charities sees organisations funded simply by individual donors and, perhaps, charitable foundations. Charities are funded from multiple sources, which can fluctuate enormously and which come with a number of different strings attached. The complexity of Children and Families Without Borders’s funding is far from unusual in the charity sector. One of the fundamental challenges faced by charities is the nature of their funding. The squeeze on government grants in particular has pushed charities to diversify their funding sources and funders have placed a huge emphasis on developing new areas of income generation such as contract income and trading income. While other areas of charity development have struggled to innovate, fundraising continues to develop new channels to reach individual donors. Across the charity sector as a whole, public funding has always been a component of charities’ income, in contrast to the public’s understanding of charity funding.
