ABSTRACT

Maternity hospitals are the only legal institutions for childbirth in Russia, which makes them central places for care provision. In this chapter, we explore key peculiarities of Russian maternity care and provide our central ideas and an overview of the book. The following problematized issues of maternity care are addressed: (1) patriarchy and paternalism in Russian maternity care; (2) the hybridization of post-Soviet maternity care via marketization and neoliberal reforms; (3) women positioning and women-centered care in post-Soviet Russia; and (4) the effects on care providers of reforms and the Soviet legacy.
