ABSTRACT

The nature of research suited to understanding children’s interests, with child participants aged less than 5 years, is the focus of this chapter. Participatory methodologies and methods are argued as those with the potential to get as close as possible to children’s lives. Ethical principles, processes, and practices founded on values of respect, relationships, and reciprocity are foundational to such research. I raise questions throughout about children’s understandings of what it means to consent to, and participate in, research with an adult whose behaviours, actions, and practices are different to parents and teachers.
