ABSTRACT

Social sustainability is one of the main aspects of urban regeneration which primarily refers to a process for making sustainable and successful places, by perceiving what people socially expect from the places in which they live and work. Generally speaking, there are a wide range of physical factors such as attractive and well-designed public spaces, decent housing, accessibility and walkability and non-physical factors like social inclusion, sense of safety and security, social cohesion, social participation, sense of place, social interaction, vitality and vibrancy of urban spaces which influence the social sustainability of urban areas. In this chapter, the methods of using big data sources (social media data and GPS trajectories) are surveyed to analyze the walkability and well-designed urban public spaces as the physical factors and vitality and vibrancy as the non-physical factors in the social sustainability. Furthermore, social media data (Instagram comments, in this case) are used for analyzing the existing situation of one of the urban public spaces (Bagh Ferdos) of Tehran, Iran for the regeneration and enhancement of the social sustainability.
