ABSTRACT

Within an Enlightenment vision of modernity and through the philosophical traditions of Descartes and Kant, human beings were identified as rational selves who were free and equal and capable of making their own lives through an independent faculty of reason. There is a way that a younger generation of men of a millennial generation growing up in different technological worlds with different relationships between living and labour would often identify themselves with feminism and anti-racism. European modernities have assumed that a dominant white masculinity can alone take its reason for granted and so can assume as bearers of reason, science and progress a superiority in relation to colonised and uncivilised others. Kant was quite clear that women needed men in a way that men do not need women. It was supposedly through accepting the subordinations of traditional marriage that women can secure a firmer relationship with reason.
