ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on recent development in healthcare with a particular focus on telemedicine or virtual healthcare. It briefly discusses some of the literature that is associated with these approaches, with a particular focus on their actual and potential implications in terms of a redesign of healthcare provision. This discussion is presented in three main sections. The first section discusses some of the historical origins of telehealth and virtual healthcare, together with some of their key managerial and quality implications. The second section explores some of the prevalent models of virtual healthcare delivery and discusses some of their, perhaps still poorly understood, roles in improving the resilience of healthcare delivery in contexts such as the current pandemic. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the management control challenges arising from healthcare delivery which is heavily reliant on telehealth or virtual healthcare approaches.
