ABSTRACT

The link between essentialism and definition makes sense if by definition we mean the act of limiting something, implying that all members of the class must necessarily share in some specified trait, without which they would cease to be members of that class. Alongside such a traditional, not to mention problematic, understanding of definition there also exist far more nuanced uses of the term. Although both initiatives lack an overall definition of their object of study, they certainly have no problem with making subsequent claims about religion in general as well as about its various subtypes or components. This term religion is so widely used throughout the world today, that it is now taken by many to be an obvious element of all human life.
