ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 provides practical ways experiential learning paradigms such as clinical experiences, cooperative education, internships, practicums, service-learning, student teaching, and study abroad can be seamlessly integrated into online courses serving as a mechanism of student engagement and facilitator of learning. John Dewey (1915) proved decades ago that students learn best while doing. Most traditional educational programs provide students with intentional ways to integrate the content and theoretical foundations learned in the course into real-world direct practice. Experiential learning can also be carried out in the online classroom; how to do so is the crux of this chapter. Key topics explored in Chapter 2 include field-based experiences in online courses, virtual simulations, and virtual field trips. Also included in this chapter is information on how technology tools can be used to assist students with connecting course content and reflection during their experiential learning experiences.
