ABSTRACT

The entreaties to saints from the Litany intensify in the suffrages of a book of hours. In this section, supplicants appealed more deeply to a select number of saints for intercession. This chapter examines the three-part structure of suffrages, probing the antiphon, versicle/response pair, and oration, all of which have musical correlates that could be recalled by users. Occasionally in place of a suffrage antiphon, a sequence may be substituted. The sequence is a notable alternative in that it offered rhymed and rhythmical poetry that was aligned with a set of melodies that promoted memory and performance of the text. The chapter concludes by surveying common suffrage-like arrangements outside of the section devoted to suffrages.
