ABSTRACT

To geopolitically contextualize the rise in paramilitary violence and the increased militarization of Northern Ireland, this chapter examines the spatial nature of political struggles and peace efforts during the period known as “The Troubles.” It examines the spatial aspects of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland through scale with a multiscalar investigation of the “Troubles” until the 1998 peace agreement. The chapter demonstrates how contestation and cooperation develop at various scales and stretch across interwoven spaces of discrimination, violence, and peace work. This chapter is not intended to provide a comprehensive history of the Troubles. Instead, it offers a multiscalar investigation (i.e., regional, state, and international) of spatialized experiences, geopolitical narratives, and significant legislation during this tumultuous era.
