ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the previous chapter’s case study to interrogate how ethnonationalism is spatially mobilized through political parading and the creation and strategic location of political murals. It explores the “meaning” of landscapes and demonstrates how urban and cultural landscapes (including political murals and parades) symbolically mark and reinforce territorial divisions along sectarian lines within many communities in Northern Ireland. Finally, this chapter explores recent efforts to modify aggressive sectarian murals and parades within this divided society.
