ABSTRACT

We all have many opportunities to engage in leadership and management. Good leaders identify, affirm, articulate, and implement an organizational vision. A vision serves as a guiding light that directs the actions of leaders, managers, and employees. Natural resource organizational visions often stem from the broad paradigm of sustainability and are implemented with specific strategies, goals, and objectives. Objectives are used by organizations to monitor, measure, and reward success for delivering products and services. Proficient human resources are crucial in leadership and management; leaders must hire, motivate, and reward employees and contractors effectively. Fairness dictates that leaders should define and explain tasks clearly; assign them equitably among their employees and teams; and reward workers fairly based on their performance, productivity, and quality. Last, leaders must make decisions in open and transparent ways, disclosing their motivations, providing clear and credible information, and seeking participation of all managers, employees, and stakeholders.
