ABSTRACT

Digitalization is transforming network industries, communications, transport, and energy, even more than other industries. Data-fed machine-learning algorithms can identify and exploit new and powerful network effects on top of pre-existing infrastructures and assets exploited in the form of a network. Players in the data layer, the digital platforms, are in the position to displace traditional players as the coordinators of the network industries insomuch as they become more efficient in the construction of a network, a data network, on top of the physical assets.
